Developing play programs to encourage development of children between the ages of Birth to 5 years

Overall aim and objectives of the training
The overall objective of this educational program is increase the understanding of developmental milestones in the areas of: cognitive development, fine and gross motor development, speech and language development, oral motor development and sensory motor skills. The purpose of this course is to provide staff members of the orphanages and any other members who work with the children with the materials and the strategies to use these materials to enhance relationships with the children, to aid in social, emotional, and cognitive development, determine at risk factors, plan and implement center-based play programs, deliver comprehensive early education and to decrease the risk of developmental delays.

Expected Outcome from the course
At the end of the course the participants should be able to

1. Develop a general understanding of the role of childhood development
2. Identify developmental risk factors
3. Create center based play programs
4. Demonstrate skills to use play based strategies to provide emotional, cognitive, linguistic, and social support to at risk children
5. Disperse materials and implement programs with all the children at the centers

Target trainees for course
Target trainees will include the staff members of the local centers and orphanages, social workers, local public health workers, pediatric nurses, as well as any other people who will work with the children including volunteers. This course will consist of the orphanage staff, social workers, public health workers, pediatric nurses, volunteers, and incorporate willing older children who live at the orphanages.

Length of course
The course will be 2 days. Day 1 will be approximately 6 hours including lunch and Day 2 will be approximately 5 hours including lunch.
